This is not simply a pearl ring—it is a remarkable little survivor.
At its center rests an exceptionally rare GIA-certified natural saltwater button pearl, measuring an impressive 11.23 x 11.09 mm and glowing with a soft rose – cream overtone and high natural luster. Unlike cultured pearls, this pearl formed entirely by chance inside a wild saltwater mollusk, without human intervention.
Its gently domed face and flatter back identify it as a classic button-shaped pearl—but this one was once quite literally a Victorian button. Tiny drill holes on the reverse remain from its former life, offering tangible evidence of the pearl’s more than century-old history. Rather than disguising them, we consider them part of its deliciously unusual story.
The pearl is accented by four antique old mine cushion-cut diamonds, individually bead set in pairs along the shoulders. Fine milgrained edges and open under galleries lend the ring a romantic, airy delicacy, while the polished flat shoulders and shank keep the design beautifully wearable.
Before cultured pearls became commercially available in the 1920’s by the most famous – Mikimoto, natural saltwater pearls were among the rarest and most coveted gems in the world—often valued alongside, and sometimes above, diamonds. Large natural pearls were symbols of extraordinary wealth, social standing and impeccable taste.
Today, genuinely natural saltwater pearls are increasingly difficult to find. A pearl of this size, accompanied by a GIA report and retaining evidence of its original Victorian use, is rarer still.

Why Natural Saltwater Pearls Are So Rare
Natural pearls form accidentally when an irritant enters a wild mollusk and is slowly coated in layers of nacre. No bead is inserted, no pearl sac is deliberately created and no farmer controls the process.
Historically, thousands of wild oysters might be opened before a single pearl of worthwhile quality was found. Large, attractive natural pearls were rarer still.
Cultured pearl production did not become commercially widespread until the early 20th century led by the now famous Mikimoto company. Consequently, the fine pearls worn during the Victorian era were natural pearls and were treasured as serious jewels.
